Cecchignola Area Plan – Transport Analysis
General overview and objectives
As part of our urban and infrastructure planning activities, we carried out a transport study for the Cecchignola Nord Area Plan (PDZ). The analysis was aimed at assessing the impact on vehicular traffic generated by the new residential and commercial development. Furthermore, the aim of the activity was to verify the need for road adjustments to support accessibility, so as to ensure effective integration with Via di Tor Pagnotta and the main road network.
Traffic surveys and traffic overview
The activities included describing the urban and road network context and conducting traffic surveys at the intersection between Via di Tor Pagnotta and Via della Cecchignola. The surveys were conducted during the morning and evening rush hours. Furthermore, the campaign was conducted using high-precision instruments, so as to monitor and classify vehicle flows without interfering with traffic. This approach yielded accurate data that fully represents the current mobility situation. Therefore, the resulting information base provided reliable support for subsequent model assessments.
Development of forecasting models and operating scenarios
We developed transport forecast models to support the new settlement, simulating various operating scenarios. The analysis covered expected flows, service levels, saturation rates and queue lengths. Furthermore, simulations made it possible to assess the sustainability of different road configurations and propose solutions compatible with the planned development of the area. Consequently, any critical issues and mitigation measures were identified in order to ensure that the design was consistent with the functional requirements of the sector.
Decision support and intervention measures
Through this assignment, we provided essential technical input to the planning process. The working group has provided objective decision-making tools to help define the necessary road works. Furthermore, the study contributed to the identification of targeted measures, including the redevelopment of the existing road network and the rationalisation of the coplanar system. This ensured a data-driven approach that was fully consistent with urban planning standards. Finally, the assessments carried out reinforced the project’s ability to integrate with the surrounding urban context.
