Black Point Roma Capitale: analysis and design for road safety
Objectives of the intervention
We work alongside local authorities to improve road safety at high-risk intersections, known as Black Points. We also provide technical support to identify, analyse and redesign critical nodes, thereby reducing danger and increasing protection for the most vulnerable users.
Support in Rome Mobility Services
A significant example is the work carried out for Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, the mobility agency of Rome City Council. The objective was to secure several intersections within the city. In addition, the project aimed to increase visibility, comfort and protection for pedestrians and cyclists. Consequently, the initiative has aligned itself with the directives of the European Commission and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, providing useful operational tools for administrations.
Analisi dei punti critici e progettazione
The activities included analytical mapping of hazardous points. In particular, the analysis was based on accident and road safety parameters. In addition, urban design measures aimed at controlling vehicle speed have been incorporated. At the same time, targeted and replicable solutions have been developed to reduce crossing times and ensure greater safety for vulnerable users. Therefore, the project has generated interventions that are compatible with the principles of sustainable mobility.
Infrastructure and technological solutions
The measures included traffic islands, lane narrowing, illuminated inserts and backlit signage. In addition, tactile paths and ramps have been created for people with reduced mobility. Furthermore, the solutions have been coordinated with public transport stops and cycle paths, thereby improving the entire accessibility system. Subsequently, street furniture, bus shelter extensions, bicycle racks and green areas were added to redevelop the public space.
Municipalities involved and benefits obtained
The design covered intersections located in five municipalities of Rome, including Largo Somalia, Piazza Re di Roma, Via Nomentana, Via Cristoforo Colombo and Via Cassia. As a result, tangible benefits have been achieved, such as reduced vehicle speeds, improved visibility and increased universal accessibility. Finally, the approach adopted provides an operational model for making public spaces safer and more sustainable, integrating road safety and urban quality into a single vision.
