DREAM_PACE Bologna: integration between DRT services and public transport

We have been chosen as technical partner by SRM – Reti e Mobilità, the local public transport agency for the Bologna metropolitan area. Our support focused on the development of the Interreg Central Europe DREAM_PACE project, dedicated to the integration of on-demand services (DRT) and traditional public transport with a view to MaaS (Mobility as a Service). Furthermore, the project involved the main stakeholders in the sector.

Scope of the work

The main goal was to define a model for integrating DRT services with local public transport services. To do this, we used standardised and replicable protocols. Consequently, it was possible to build a solid and shared methodological basis.

Analysis of best practices and GTFS-Flex protocols

The first activity involved studying international best practices. Next, we analysed the applications of the GTFS-Flex protocol, which is now used to describe DRT services and integrate them into MaaS systems. In addition, we have developed interoperability models that enable real-time management of information such as itineraries, availability and bookings. These solutions guarantee full compatibility with standardised APIs and with the guidelines prepared for local authorities and operators.

Demand analysis and replicable methodology

Parallelamente, abbiamo analizzato la domanda potenziale dei servizi DRT. The activity identified areas with high demand and those with weaker demand in the metropolitan area. To do this, we combined socio-demographic data, mobility surveys, telephone Origin/Destination matrices and Floating Car Data (FCD). This made it possible to develop a replicable methodology. In addition, a demand model was generated for user profiles, modes of transport and reasons for travel. The result outlined a preliminary network of connections based on principles of efficiency and sustainability.

Standard DRT costs and Living Lab support

Il progetto ha incluso anche lo studio dei costi standard del DRT, come indicato dal DM 157/2018.Standard DRT costs and Living Lab support In addition, we supported SRM in managing the Living Lab stakeholder group. This ongoing dialogue has enabled the exchange of operational experiences and the validation of key technical results.

Communication tools and dashboards

We have developed digital communication tools and interactive dashboards to disseminate the results. Consequently, DREAM_PACE has been consolidated as an innovative laboratory for metropolitan mobility planning. Furthermore, the project is now a European benchmark for the integration of DRT and MaaS.
