Monitoring of goods flows for PRIT 2025
Project objectives
We were commissioned to develop an advanced service for monitoring heavy vehicle traffic flows throughout the Emilia-Romagna region. The objective was to produce reliable Origin/Destination matrices and support the forecast analyses of the PRIT 2025. Furthermore, the project aimed to improve understanding of logistics dynamics at regional level.
Data processing
The work involved processing Floating Car Data (FCD) relating to a typical month in 2019. Goods vehicles have been classified into classes C2 and C3 according to the regional model. Furthermore, the datasets were homogenised to ensure consistency with already validated statistical methodologies.
Monitoring post-lockdown periods
At the same time, a report was drawn up on the effects of the lockdown, based on a typical month in 2020. This report has been compared with 2019 trends and the 2018 dataset. Consequently, it was possible to highlight variations in logistical patterns linked to mobility restrictions. Furthermore, the comparison revealed the most significant differences between ordinary periods and periods of shock.
Calibration and final results
The matrices were calibrated using data from regional and motorway MTS stations. They were then made available in an interoperable format, such as CSV or equivalent. The project has helped to consolidate our role in heavy goods flow modelling. Furthermore, it provided strategic databases to support logistics and intermodal planning for the entire region.
