Monitoring road safety KPIs for the MIT

Service objectives

We carried out the road safety performance indicator (IPSS) survey for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. The activity was aimed at monitoring the Key Performance Indicators defined by the European Commission. In addition, the work involved checking the use of seat belts, child restraint systems and personal protective equipment used by drivers of two-wheeled vehicles and bicycles. In this way, we have ensured clear and consistent measurement of safety behaviours.

Methodology and data collection

The surveys were conducted in two campaigns during 2024, one in spring and one in autumn.
Each campaign included at least 90 observation sessions. Furthermore, the data was collected using dedicated forms and subsequently validated in accordance with EU standards. This process ensured full comparability with the indicators defined by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport. Consequently, the quality of the final dataset was high.

Coordination and operational management

The entire service was carried out in constant coordination with the ministerial offices. We defined detailed programmes, planned the survey sessions and drafted interim and final reports. Furthermore, the work was guided by a data-driven approach based on transparency and efficiency. This has enabled timely and reliable support for strategic decisions on road safety.

Results and value for national policies

The project has consolidated our role as a technical reference point in the measurement of road safety KPIs. Consequently, the results obtained represent operational tools based on objective evidence. This evidence contributes to improving national policies and reducing the risks associated with mobility.
