Origin-Destination Matrix for Ferrovie del Sud Est

Project objectives

Together with Vodafone Analytics and Motion Analytica, we have created Origin/Destination modal matrices for Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE), a company belonging to the FS Italiane group. The objective was to provide a comprehensive picture of regional mobility demand. Furthermore, the work made it possible to accurately distinguish the dynamics between weekdays, days before public holidays and public holidays, thus supporting the planning of public and private transport services.

Methodology of analysis

The activities involved extracting O/D matrices from telephone data provided by Vodafone Italy, structured according to zoning shared with the client. Furthermore, during the course of the work, we consolidated the matrices by validating the magnitude of the shifts and the main macro-relationships. We have also corrected for possible distorting effects linked to rebound phenomena, so as to ensure a reliable database.

Modal distinction and indicators

The modal distinction was developed using dedicated algorithms and procedures. Therefore, the matrices were divided by mode of transport, public and private. In addition, we have produced accurate indicators of changes in demand, differentiating each day of the week and each time slot, in order to provide a realistic and dynamic picture.

Results and applications

We have provided the Apulia Region with an advanced and replicable tool capable of describing regional mobility in detail and differentiated by season. Consequently, the dataset is useful for strategic transport planning. Furthermore, it supports the development of sustainable mobility policies based on quantitative evidence that can be updated over time.
