PFTE Anagnina–Ciampino Corridor and Porta dei Castelli Hub

Objectives and general approach

We developed the transport study for the Technical-Economic Feasibility Project for the Anagnina–Ciampino Corridor and the “Porta dei Castelli” intermodal hub. Il nostro scopo era fornire un supporto tecnico chiaro e immediato alla definizione delle alternative progettuali. Furthermore, we have aimed to facilitate the choice of the most effective and sustainable solution.

Demand analysis and knowledge framework

First, we reconstructed current and future mobility demand. We analysed journeys using origin/destination matrices and studied passenger and vehicle flows along the corridor. Subsequently, we integrated data collected in the field, open data, and Big Data. This has provided us with an up-to-date, consistent and easily verifiable picture. The combination of different sources improved the quality of the analysis and reduced uncertainties.

Construction of simulation scenarios

We developed simulation scenarios to estimate the performance of the proposed infrastructure. Each scenario included indicators on journey times, network capacity and service levels. This process enabled us to easily assess the effects on the main components of the mobility system. In addition, we examined integration with public transport and connections with intermodal hubs.

Benchmarking and key indicators

The analyses produced indicators that were useful for comparing the design alternatives. We examined in particular the impact on private traffic, local public transport and the structure of interchange hubs. Thanks to these tools, the contracting authority was able to assess the technical and economic sustainability of the various solutions more quickly.

Benefits for planning

Our work has strengthened the overall quality of the PFTE. Furthermore, it has directed planning towards more effective interventions that are consistent with sustainable mobility objectives. The analyses have improved understanding of accessibility to Ciampino Airport and highlighted the strategic role of the ‘Porta dei Castelli’ hub. Finally, the data-driven toolset provided concrete support for the Project Review and offered a solid foundation for the subsequent project phases.
