Monitoring road safety in Sardinia: development of the regional information system

Objectives and general framework

We participated in the development of the Information System for the Regional Road Safety Monitoring Centre of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. The objective was to integrate knowledge, data and tools useful for supporting road safety policies. In addition, the project involved the design of an advanced IT infrastructure for the acquisition, analysis and distribution of road accident data. As a result, the Region can now rely on an interoperable and accessible system.

System structure and data management

Activities included the design of an integrated detection system based on GIS tools and centralised databases. Inoltre, il sistema è stato progettato per raccogliere informazioni provenienti da Polizie Locali, ISTAT e altri enti competenti. Subsequently, our study contributed to the definition of validation procedures, the classification of the road network and the structuring of accident databases. At the same time, traffic and infrastructure intervention data were also integrated to ensure a reliable and multidisciplinary operating model.

Advanced system features

The infrastructure developed included features for georeferencing claims, user profiling, and monitoring dashboards. Furthermore, the system allows for the development of predictive scenarios and comparative assessments, which are useful in supporting administrative decisions. Di conseguenza, il modello permette una lettura più accurata dei fattori di rischio e una gestione più efficace delle priorità di intervento.

Training, communication and governance

The intervention also included training and communication activities aimed at local authorities. Subsequently, the regional road safety portal was created, designed to ensure the dissemination of data and the involvement of stakeholders. Furthermore, the integrated and data-driven approach adopted has made the system replicable and scalable. Consequently, the Region can improve the effectiveness of prevention policies and strengthen governance in the field of road safety.
