SUMP Bologna monitoring: dashboard indicators and support for mobility governance

Objectives of the assignment

On behalf of SRM – Reti e Mobilità Srl, we implemented the SUMP Monitoring Dashboard for the Metropolitan City of Bologna. The objective was to develop innovative tools for monitoring mobility indicators. Furthermore, the system had to be practical, dynamic and transparent, so as to allow for continuous assessment of the effectiveness of actions and the achievement of targets by 2030. Consequently, the project required a high degree of integration between data, visualisation and analysis methodologies.

Database design and methodology

The activities involved the creation and management of the indicator database structure. In particular, the architecture has been designed to be fully compatible with the Tableau platform, so as to ensure autonomous data updating. We also defined the methodology for analysis and graphic representation, ensuring consistency with the objectives of the SUMP and the PGTU (General Urban Traffic Plan) of Bologna. At the same time, unified rules have been established for the classification, standardisation and temporal reading of information.

Development of the Monitoring Dashboard

The Dashboard interface was also developed, divided into 25 dashboards dedicated to the macro-objectives of the SUMP. The layout was designed according to criteria of ergonomics, clarity and visual immediacy. In addition, the dashboards provide an intuitive reading of indicator trends, making it easier to identify deviations from targets. The system was then tested with automatic update scenarios, ensuring stability and operational continuity.

Training and skills transfer

The project was completed with the training of SRM and Metropolitan City staff. Operating procedures were also provided for the autonomous management of the system and for the periodic updating of indicators. Therefore, the administration can now use the dashboard as a daily monitoring and decision-making support tool.

Results and operational value

Through this assignment, we have consolidated our experience in building SUMP monitoring tools and strategic decision support tools. Furthermore, the work strengthens the decision-making capacity of local authorities, making the governance of sustainable mobility at metropolitan level more effective. Finally, the system enables continuous assessment based on objective data, facilitating the implementation of the policies set out in the SUMP.
