UEFA 2020 accessibility planning

Context and objectives of the intervention

For EURO 2020, the first European football championship hosted by 12 cities, we supported Roma Servizi per la Mobilità in planning accessibility systems for the Olympic Stadium. The event involved over 60,000 people, including fans and staff. Consequently, it was necessary to define targeted strategies to ensure safety, fluidity and sustainability of travel in one of the most complex contexts of mobility in the capital.

Analysis of flows and organisation of access

Activities focused on managing and dividing spectator flows into three broad categories. In particular, VIPs accessed the stadium via private motorised vehicles and car parks close to the stadium. At the same time, non-organised supporters could reach the area on foot, by bicycle, by tram or by dedicated shuttle buses. Finally, the organised supporters were provided with reserved bus parking spaces in the surrounding areas.

Design of routes and operational infrastructure

We have designed dedicated itineraries for each group, ensuring physical separation of routes and efficient flow of visitors both entering and exiting the site. In addition, we were responsible for designing the bus stops, waiting areas for shuttles and trams, and critical points such as Cipro and Piazzale Flaminio. This approach has enabled fast and functional connections between the historic centre and the Olympic Stadium, reducing operational criticalities.

Wayfinding and user experience quality

At the same time, a wayfinding plan was developed, including pedestrian and public transport signage, directional and regulatory road signs, and dedicated routes to VIP parking areas. As a result, the entire accessibility system is now consistent, clear and safe, improving the mobility experience for all users.
